TIME

Are you hesitant to style your child's hair due to the amount of time it takes? Know that, if you start your child's loc journey, time will be on your side. Loc appointments are typically every 2-3 months and can last anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours. And the best part of it all? Kids do not have to sit for prolonged periods while getting their locs serviced or installed, which works great for moms on the go, including those with multiple children, who may not have a lot of time to devote to styling their child's hair. With locs, you can balance your time better by spending less time on hair and more on your other obligations.

MONEY

Loc Maintenance

Loc maintenance can range anywhere from $70-$100, which is only a fraction of what people pay for more expensive unnatural styles like braids and wig installs. Braid styles typically cost anywhere from $150-$500 on average, depending on the location, braider, and the competition. However, if your budget is $0, you can learn how to maintain and retwist your child's hair with online tutorials and in-person classes in record time!

Less Expensive Products

With locs, less is more so if you're thinking of purchasing a ton of products that will ultimately cost you an unnecessary amount of money, think again! Loc products are way less expensive than those for natural hair, and guess what--you won't need as many!

Simply put, you'll need a hair oil, a moisturizing spray, and of course, shampoo and conditioner. When I transitioned to locs, I was so happy that I no longer had to have dozens of products which ultimately made caring for my locs a breeze!

VERSATILITY

If your child is easily bored with the same hairstyles, then locs are definitely the answer! Locs offer quick styles that are easy to do and maintain. Depending on the mood or occasion, you can style your child's locs with hair ties, bows, or clips, or leave them down. Ponytails, buns, and two-strand twists are just some of the many loc styles your child can proudly don!

Regardless of the look they choose to sport, the versatility of their locs will allow your little one to develop and express their unique, personal style with great confidence!

NATURAL EXPRESSION

If your child is struggling to embrace their natural hair, then locs can give them a major confidence boost. Transitioning through each phase of their loc journey will teach children to have love and patience for their natural locs regardless of their hair texture and length. Hence, just like adults, children can have a hang-up about the shrinkage they experience during their starter loc or "ugly phase", but if they can make it through, children ultimately learn that their hair is beautiful and not a thing to hide or feel ashamed of. Hence, most people who've embarked on their loc journey report a new love and appreciation for their hair and have no regrets about loc'ing it up.

Children must be shown how to accept what naturally grows from their hair and to see it as a symbol of beauty. Hence, when we wear braids and wigs to feel beautiful, we unknowingly send a message to our kids that their hair is not beautiful and should always be covered with weave. This is turn creates a cycle of self-hatred that is perpetuated with every weave or wig style. Hence, children learn to become dependent on unnatural hair, even at the expense of their hair's health because they've been conditioned to believe that their hair is not the ultimate beauty standard. More times than not, weave has been the cause of damaged, unhealthy hair in the black community. Ask a grown-up why her hair is damaged or missing, and she'll most likely tell you it's due to a weave style that either pulled it out or dried it out until it broke off.

IN CONCLUSION...

By considering the points mentioned above, I trust that you will feel empowered to start your child's loc journey today. Locking your child's hair will not only be a time and cost-effective choice but will also encourage versatility, self-expression, and self-acceptance. These factors play a significant role in boosting a child's confidence and fostering a positive self-image.
